Membership Dues Reminder
2015 ZVA membership dues of $10 are based on the calendar year. Please check your dues status on the web site. Go to Your Profile in the user menu and look at the last item in the column on the right side of the page where it says “Dues paid to the end of: ____” If you have not yet paid for 2015, please remit your dues using one of the options described on the Membership page. From September on, I will credit new members for the following year. I will downgrade unrenewed members on the web site in April of each year to give you plenty of grace. We are continually adding new content to the Members Only parts of the site. If you are not connected to the Internet, just drop me a line at the address below and I will update you. Thanks for contributing to our common cause.
Spam on User Profiles
Over the past few months we have been experiencing false registrations on our site, cluttering up our User Profiles with fake users. I apologize for the inconvenience if you have had to wade through these false users to find the ones of interest to you. Until now, I have just been deleting them every few days. Sometimes I average 40 deletions per day over several days. I plan to upgrade the site in the near future to try to eliminate this problem.
Saskatchewan Genealogy Society Spring Conference
The SGS Spring conference has been postponed to April 15-17, 2016 in Regina. The organizing committee for 2015 got off to a bit of a late start. This, combined with the fact that SGS is undergoing an organizational review, caused a postponement of the planned 2015 event.
SGS has asked ZVA to help host its conference. This will give us the opportunity to raise our profile in Saskatchewan and possibly attract new members who can contribute new family information and become part of our family. I have agreed to be the Master of Ceremonies and give at least one talk. They will also need volunteers: pick up and drop off out-of-town speakers at the airport; introduce and thank speakers at each session; and miscellaneous other tasks. We will also have our own table that will need to be covered. If you are in the Regina area and you can help out, please contact me at the email address below or at 306-789-4481.
Sorin Fortiu
Plans to bring Sorin to Mount Angel, Oregon for this year’s Donauschwaben conference have fallen through, so we will also not be bringing him to Regina.

New in the Library
Familienbuch Saint Hubert – Charleville – Seultour im Banat 1836 – 1943 by Dave Dreyer and Karen Dalton Preston. Here is a review posted online by Bill Knuttel.
Karen Dalton Preston and David Dreyer took on an enormous and long needed project, and the result is stunning. These three villages were an extremely important area for the Donauschwaben, and I suspect that the wealth of information now readily available in the two volumes will help many, many researchers, as so many other villages were intertwined with St. Hubert et al. More than simply a compendium of recently found church book records, Karen and David clearly worked endless hours to correct many of the mistaken connections in Josef Kuhn’s volume of the earlier church books (pre-1830 or so), mistakes that were unavoidable because of the scant information available at the time that volume was published. If you are researching in the St. Hubert area, these new volumes are essential!
Familienbuch der katholischen Pfarrgemeinde Triebswetter im Banat by Lothar Renard. Triebswetter is another of the early Banat villages that provided the pioneers for other villages. This two volume set picks up where the previous work left off with Family groups compiled from church records: births 1833-1900, marriages 1869-1900, deaths 1851-1900. Lots of supplementary information, lists, and indices.
New Online
Here is a report by Günter Junkers on a new resource for Detta/Denta.
The second volume of the Familienbuch Detta/Banat 1847-1906 is available online at http://www.online-ofb.de/detta/
The first volume 1724-1846/52 written by Adam Krämer was published 1995 as vol 43 of Schriftenreihe zur donauschwäbischen Herkunftsforschung of Arbeitskreis donauschwäbischer Familienforscher (AkdFF).
While Adam Krämer used printouts from microfilms of Stuttgart Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, Monika Ferrier, Kanada, now used photos of the original parish books from the Temesvar State Archive:
- Bapt. 1847-1906
- Marr: 1852-1902
- Deaths: 1852-1901
The database has about 24.200 persons and 8359 families. Additional data were taken from neighbor places when family books were available. No Umlauts or diacritical letters were used, many variations in names led to uncertainties, so persons may appear twice and have to be merged. Its a work in progress and data will be updated later on. Your amendments are welcome, please send to info@akdff.de
ZVA Regina Branch Meeting
Regina Branch will meet at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, at Access Communications, 2250 Park St. (north door by the ball diamonds). The main agenda item is election of officers for the coming year. Please mark your calendar and bring along a Zichydorf friend.
